Phone Unlocking
I was recently asked if I could unlock a phone for somebody. In case you didn't know, unlocking generally means allowing a mobile phone to accept a sim card from a network other than what the phone was originally intended for.
So, I had a look around and come across quite a few free tools. Unfortunately for me, they weren't compatible with the handset I was tasked with unlocking. None the less, these tools could come in handy in the future. Here they are:
The link takes you to Softpedia.com where the software can be downloaded. Please be careful to click the correct "Download" button as they seem to like confusing their visitors into downloading other software.
The software itself appears capable of unlocking a large number of phones of various brand by using the phone's unique imei number to calculate an unlock code. I downloaded and installed it (after a clean virus scan), but it was unable to provide an unlock code for the phone I had.
I searched a few torrent sites and found a couple of collections of tools. They seem free and legal (many even state "Not For Sale" and / or "Home Use Only"). They seem to do pretty much the same as the previous suite, but there's going to be a few models which were not included in WorldUnlock Codes Generator. None of them helped me though.
I've bundled the lot together in a tidy .zip archive for your convenience. You can download it here.
Although not for the phone I was unlocking today, I've used this site in the past to unlock a couple of ZTE phones. There's no download and no waiting around for an email. Simlpy enter the phone's imei number and a provided security code and it will return you a working unlock code.
So, did I manage to unlock the phone? Well, yes, but I cheated. I paid £1.50 to have somebody on eBay send me an unlock code!
