Coding I'm a bit of a wannabe coder. I usually learn a bit of something, leave it for a while before coming back and learning a little more.
I'm a huge fan of the CodeAcademy website which lets you learn to code (for free) via its website. There are a number of programming languages you can pick up ranging from HTML, CSS and Javascript to Python and Ruby. I've had a dabble with Javascript and touched up what I already knew of HTML, but I'm having most fun with Python. I'm still a way off even being called a beginner in any programming language, but check out my Python page if you wan to share what I've learned so far and join in the fun. If the idea of 'coding' sounds out of your reach, start off with something fun (and free) by downloading Scratch (here). Scratch is an application that aims at allowing you to play with programming principles without actually having to know anything about programming. If you have the slightest interest in learning or playing with a computer language, this is a great place to start. The idea is that you drag and drop components of a chain of commands. Some commands may cause an item to move forward, some may cause them to rotate, some even play sounds. You can adjust how much each command does by simply changing a number, a colour or a sound. The end result can be a game, a tool (like an artist's palette) or a presentation. The amount of support available for Scratch is huge as there is a big community of users. You can check out thousands of user generated examples before you develop your own. |
